How Often Should You Wash Your Bra?

Let’s face it, many of us probably have a favourite bra. Whether it’s a comfy wireless bra or a lace number that makes us feel our best selves, we all have a go-to style that we love.

So that got us thinking, how should we actually be taking care of our bras? Should we be washing them after every use or wait until they’ve had a couple of wears? And have we been washing our bras wrong this whole time? If, like us, you’ve got some unanswered bra dilemmas, we’ve got you covered girl.

One of the most common question when it comes to our lingerie is how often should you wash your bra? Whilst it can vary from person to person, experts have said that on average, we should wash our bras every 2-3 wears. But, if we’re washing our other underwear after every use, then why not our bras? The simple answer is because more often than not, over-washing your bras can actually cause more damage than good. Because we rely on our bras for support, we need them to keep their elasticity and shape, so washing too much will definitely damage the wear-ability of your bra.

You should also think about what actually classes as one wear. If you’re wearing a sports bra whilst working out, it’s more likely that you should wash your bra straight after one use as it’s had direct contact with the skin. But, if you’re just wearing your bra for a couple hours then you might not even class that as one wear so it’s totally up to your own judgement.

Tips For Washing Your Bra

Experts have also said that the average life expectancy of a bra is just one year. So, if we want to carry on wearing our faves, we need to take the best care them that we can. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here’s some of our top tips for washing your bra:

#1 Fasten the clasps when washing

If you want to avoid damaging the material of your bra, then you should fasten the hook and eye clasps when washing. This will prevent rips to the bra’s material as well as avoid damaging any of your other wardrobe favourites in the wash.

#2 Wash on a cool temperature

There’s nothing more annoying than when your favourite clothes shrink in the wash. So imagine shrinking your favourite bra!? This is something you’ll definitely want to avoid at all costs. Experts have suggested washing your bras on a 30 degree heat to prevent any unwanted shrinking.

#3 Use a laundry bag for delicate items

If you’re washing your more delicate bras such as silk and lace styles, it might be worth separating them from the rest of your washing. You could do this by putting them in a small, breathable laundry bag to prevent any damage.
