How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Whilst we love creating an insta-worthy makeup look, we do have to admit that we sometimes neglect cleaning our makeup brushes as often as we should.

Experts say we should be cleaning our foundation and concealer brushes at least once a week whilst our eye makeup brushes should be cleaned around twice a month.

If our makeup brushes aren’t cleaned regularly, it can lead to a build-up of bacteria which can then cause breakouts which is far from ideal.

So, if like us, you’re looking to give your makeup brushes a bit of TLC, carry on reading for our top tips on how to clean your makeup brushes.

STEP 1: RINSE

First things first, you’re going to want to rinse your makeup brush under lukewarm water.

This will help kill any bacteria that’s built up on the brush.

It’s best to avoid using really hot water as this can not only damage the bristles but if the water get’s to the handle of the brush, it can loosen the glue, causing it to fall apart.

STEP 2: WASH

When it comes to washing your brushes, you can use a makeup brush cleanser such as the Stylpro Makeup Brush Cleanser.

Alternatively, an anti-bacterial soap or even baby shampoo will work well. The key is to make sure it’s a gentle cleanser as regular soaps can sometimes dry out the bristles of the brush.

Simply apply a small amount of cleanser to the brush and swirl it across the back of your hand. You’ll instantly be able to see any product being washed away from the brush.

If you can still see any makeup left on the brush, simply repeat until there’s no residue left on.

STEP 3: DRY

Once you’re happy that there’s no makeup left of the brush, squeeze the bristles with a clean towel to get rid of any excess moisture.

Then lay the brushes flat on the edge of a surface such as a table or chair. Try to avoid standing your brushes up or putting them back in your makeup brush holder whilst they’re still wet as the water will drip to the handle and cause damage.

It can take a while for makeup brushes to dry naturally so we’d recommend cleaning them at the end of the day and leaving them to dry overnight so they’re sparkly clean and ready to use in the morning.
