Why Breadcrumbing Is The New Ghosting

Why Breadcrumbing Is The New Ghosting

So we’ve all heard of ghosting, but have you ever heard of breadcrumbing? The practice of breadcrumbing is defined by Urban Dictionary as “When a guy or girl gives someone just enough attention to keep their hope of a relationship alive.” So essentially a new way for f*ckboys (or girls) to string you along.

Arguably, breadcrumbing might just be more cruel than a standard ghost, instead of just cutting you loose, breadcrumbers will send you sporadic messages or the odd like on social media to remind you they exist. Not content with letting any semblance of a relationship you once had fizzle out, breadcrumbers prefer to leave a trail of mixed messages, leaving you confused as to where you actually stand.

The act of sending noncommittal but flirtatious messages, or giving someone just enough attention to keep them interested so the other person has someone on standby is naturally infuriating for the person on the receiving end of the ‘crumbs.’  One minute they’re blowing up your phone the next they’re cancelling on you again. But what’s the best way to deal with a breadcrumber?

A vast majority of relationship probs can be solved with a bit of good old-fashioned honest communication. You have two options in this situ, you either stop taking the bait and cut off contact or you confront them and figure out what’s really going on here. Just because someone is breadcrumbing you doesn’t necessarily mean you have to cut them out of your life. If you’re cool with occasional booty-calls, and can separate that from your ‘serious’ dating life, then more power to you (just make sure you’re being honest with yourself).

Ultimately, if a breadcrumber’s constant hot-and-cold attitude starts to negatively impact your emotions, then it might be time to just call things off and start fresh.
